The Crime Investigation Department (CID) has complied with the directive of the Calcutta High Court and handed over Sheikh Shahjahan, the suspended Trinamool Congress leader accused of multiple offenses including extortion, land grab, and sexual assault, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Following the High Court's order, a team from the CBI arrived at the Bhabani Bhaban Police Headquarters in Kolkata to take custody of Sheikh Shahjahan.
The Calcutta High Court, expressing dissatisfaction with the state police's handling of the matter, issued a contempt notice to the West Bengal CID and directed that the investigation into the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials be transferred to the CBI. The court emphasized the urgency of the matter and ordered that the accused be handed over to the CBI by a specific time.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has sought an urgent hearing in the Supreme Court regarding its plea challenging the Calcutta High Court's order for a CBI probe into the Sandeshkhali incident, where ED officials were attacked on January 5.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with women victims of sexual assault in Sandeshkhali village, listening to their grievances and assuring them of assistance. The victims expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister for understanding their plight and requested deployment of Central Forces due to lack of faith in the state government's actions.
In response, PM Modi condemned the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government for allegedly shielding the accused in the Sandeshkhali case, describing it as a "matter of shame." He accused the TMC leaders of committing atrocities against women in West Bengal and criticized the government for prioritizing its leaders over the welfare of the state's women.
Sheikh Shahjahan, who was arrested by the West Bengal police on February 29, was remanded to 10-day police custody by the Basirhat Court after weeks of no action.
