India / West Bengal :
The Supreme Court is set to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a court-monitored Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the violence in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali village.
The PIL, filed by advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, is scheduled to be heard by a bench comprising Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Augustine George Masih on Monday. The top court agreed to hear the plea after it was mentioned for urgent listing by Srivastava on February 16.
Srivastava, a practising Supreme Court lawyer, filed the PIL in his personal capacity. The plea also seeks compensation for the victims of the Sandeshkhali violence and action against officials of the West Bengal Police for alleged dereliction of duty.
In addition to the probe and compensation, the PIL requests the transfer of the investigation and subsequent trial outside West Bengal. It also seeks an inquiry by a three-judge committee, similar to the one conducted in the Manipur violence case.
Sandeshkhali, located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, has been embroiled in protests over allegations of sexual abuse of women by a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader. Several local women have accused the TMC strongman Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters of land-grab and sexual assault.
Shajahan Sheikh has been reportedly absconding after a mob, allegedly affiliated with him, attacked Enforcement Directorate officials conducting a search at his premises in connection with a corruption case.
The PIL aims to address the unrest and violence in Sandeshkhali by urging for a thorough investigation, compensation for victims, and accountability for officials. It underscores the importance of ensuring justice and fairness in handling such sensitive matters, especially when allegations involve violence and abuse of power.
