Uttar Pradesh / Kanpur :

In a significant move to promote indigenous defence manufacturing and bolster the vision of "Aatmanirbharta in Defence," the Ministry of Defence has finalized a contract worth Rs 1,752.13 crore with Advanced Weapon Equipment India Limited (AWEIL), based in Kanpur. The contract entails the manufacturing and supply of 463 indigenously built 12.7 mm stabilised remote control guns (SRCG) for deployment by the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.

This contract marks a significant milestone in India's journey towards self-reliance in defence production. With an emphasis on indigenous content (IC) exceeding 85 per cent, the agreement underscores the government's commitment to promoting domestic manufacturing capabilities and reducing dependency on imports.

The 12.7 mm stabilised remote control guns are designed to enhance the operational capabilities of the Navy and Coast Guard, enabling them to effectively engage small targets that pose a threat to maritime security. Equipped with advanced features, these guns enable precise targeting both during the day and at night, enhancing the maritime security posture in asymmetric environments.

Furthermore, the contract is expected to create a ripple effect in the defence manufacturing ecosystem, benefiting over 125 Indian vendors and Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) over a period of five years. This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy to foster collaboration between public and private entities, driving innovation and technological advancement in the defence sector.

The Ministry of Defence emphasized that the contract not only strengthens India's defence capabilities but also signifies a significant step towards self-reliance and indigenous manufacturing excellence. By harnessing the expertise and capabilities of domestic firms like AWEIL, the ministry aims to propel India's defence industry towards global competitiveness while ensuring security and sovereignty.
