In a distressing incident, a 28-year-old man hailing from Uttarakhand, identified as Paras, has been apprehended by Delhi police for allegedly raping and subjecting a woman friend from West Bengal's Darjeeling to a week-long ordeal of physical and sexual assault, including torturing her by pouring hot lentils on her.
The accused, who worked as a cook at an eatery, was booked for rape, sodomy, and causing hurt, according to police sources. The arrest was made on 2 February.
The harrowing episode came to light on 30 January when the Neb Sarai police station received a PCR call reporting domestic violence. Upon reaching the scene, police officers discovered the victim, who had sustained around 20 injury marks on her body, and promptly rushed her to AIIMS, New Delhi, for medical attention. She had recently been discharged from the hospital, authorities informed.
Is per police investigation, the victim and the accused had become acquainted over the phone over a period of 3-4 months. The victim, en route to Bengaluru for a job opportunity, had made a stop in Delhi where she intended to meet Paras. Initially, Paras had offered assistance in finding a job, leading the victim to stay with him in a rented accommodation in south Delhi's Neb Sarai area.
However, the situation took a drastic turn as Paras allegedly began physically assaulting and sexually abusing the victim over the course of a week. The victim recounted instances of being thrashed and subjected to sexual assault, culminating in a particularly heinous act where Paras allegedly poured hot lentils on her, causing burn injuries.
Based on the victim's complaint, an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including charges of voluntarily causing hurt, rape, and sodomy. The accused was promptly arrested, and further investigation into the matter is underway, as stated by police officials.
The incident underscores the urgent need for swift and decisive action to address cases of violence against women, emphasizing the importance of robust legal measures and societal awareness to ensure justice and protection for victims.
