A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah began Wednesday prompting thousands of displaced Lebanese to return home. The truce halts a conflict that caused thousands of deaths and mass displacement on both sides
The war intensified after Hezbollah increased cross-border attacks supporting its Palestinian ally Hamas. Hamas's attack on Israel last October triggered a devastating war in Gaza. In September Israel shifted its focus to Lebanon to address Hezbollah attacks on its northern border.
Lebanese roads particularly the route from Beirut to Sidon saw heavy traffic as people returned with belongings. Some celebrated honking car horns and singing. One driver stated: "What we feel is indescribable. The people have won!"
Over 900,000 people fled their homes during the recent fighting according to the UN. Lebanon reports at least 3,823 deaths since October 2023 mostly in recent weeks. Israel reports at least 82 soldiers and 47 civilians killed.
The final hours before the ceasefire saw intense fighting especially in Beirut where Israeli strikes hit areas like the Hamra district. Hezbollah also claimed attacks on Israel up until the truce.
Iran a Hezbollah supporter welcomed the end of the fighting. Hamas expressed readiness for a truce in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the ceasefire allows Israel to refocus
US President Joe Biden announced the ceasefire agreement Tuesday. US envoy Amos Hochstein said Israeli forces near the Lebanese border would gradually withdraw over 60 days.
While Lebanon celebrated there was no similar large-scale return of the 60,000 Israelis displaced by Hezbollah's attacks. However some Israelis expressed hope for the future. Roni Alon said: "My opinion is that after a year-plus of war, of shelling, of hostages in the south, a ceasefire agreement is an agreement that should give Israel some kind of hope. I hope there will be peace in the world
