India / New Delhi :
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finally addressed the deadly ethnic conflict that has been raging in the state of Manipur, India, after a shocking video surfaced showing the brutal assault and alleged gang rape of two women from the minority Kuki tribe by a mob from the majority Meitei tribal group.
The incident, which took place in early May, caused widespread outrage across the nation. The video shows the victims being forcibly stripped naked and subjected to verbal abuse before being publicly groped and dragged to a field where the alleged gang rape occurred. The victims reported fleeing their village after it was attacked and set on fire by a Meitei mob when they were confronted by another Meitei gang.
Although the incident was reported to the police soon after it occurred, it was not until the video went viral that arrests were made. The delay in action has drawn criticism, and one of the victims even alleged that the police left them in the hands of the mob.
Prime Minister Modi, breaking his months-long silence on the conflict, spoke at the opening session of parliament on Thursday morning. He expressed deep sorrow and anger over the attack on the women and assured the nation that no guilty individuals would be spared. He stated, "What happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven. As I stand next to this temple of democracy, my heart is filled with pain and anger."
The ongoing conflict between the Meitei and Kuki tribes has resulted in the deaths of more than 140 people, with the majority being from the Kuki community. The state of Manipur is now effectively divided along ethnic lines, with the Meitei community residing in the valley and the Kuki community controlling the hills. The situation has led to civilian forces from both sides clashing violently, displacing over 60,000 people and causing extensive destruction.
The video that surfaced has drawn condemnation from various quarters, including the Supreme Court, which called it "deeply disturbing" and a "gross constitutional failure." Chief Justice of India, Dhananjaya Chandrachud, expressed criticism towards the government for its inability to bring the situation in Manipur under control. He emphasized that the government must take immediate action, warning that the Supreme Court would intervene if necessary.
Activists have voiced their disappointment over the delayed response from both the government and the public, expressing that it should not have taken such a disturbing video to draw attention to the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
In the wake of this horrifying incident, the nation is now awaiting concrete action and measures from the government to address the root causes of the conflict and ensure justice for the victims and affected communities.
