India / Haryana :

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has resigned from his position, along with his entire cabinet, amid speculation of a rift in the ruling BJP-JJP alliance over seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The resignation comes as both the BJP and the JJP, led by Dushyant Chautala, have announced plans to contest the polls independently.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured all 10 seats in Haryana, while the JJP, a newly formed party at the time, failed to win any seats but garnered a notable vote share of 4.9 percent. This time, the JJP had requested two Lok Sabha seats, but the BJP, aiming to win 370 seats across the country independently, was only willing to concede one.

The JJP's significance stems from its 10 seats won in the 2019 Assembly elections, which played a pivotal role in the BJP forming the government with a slim majority. Mr. Khattar's resignation comes amidst speculation that he may contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Karnal seat, currently held by BJP's Sanjay Bhatia, who may transition to the Haryana Assembly to potentially become Chief Minister.

However, there is also speculation that Mr. Khattar could return as Chief Minister, heading a government supported by independent MLAs. This new government may include two Deputy Chief Ministers from different communities, as the BJP aims to ensure representation across various castes and communities, similar to its strategy in other states. Additionally, sources suggest that five JJP MLAs may defect to the BJP, forming a breakaway group to join the ruling party.
