Supreme Court Rules MPs, MLAs Not Immune from Prosecution for Bribery

The Supreme Court, in a landmark verdict, overturned the immunity granted to Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) in bribery cases related to their votes or speeches in the legislature. The unanimous decision by a seven-judge Constitution Bench overruled the 1998 judgement in the PV Narasimha Rao case, stating that corruption and bribery by legislators undermine the functioning of Indian democracy. The ruling clarifies that MPs and MLAs can be prosecuted for accepting bribes, emphasizing the importance of upholding parliamentary integrity and accountability.

Congress Revokes Suspension of Three Jharkhand MLAs Involved in Cash Haul Case

The Congress party has lifted the suspension of its three Jharkhand MLAs who were allegedly caught with a large amount of cash in West Bengal's Howrah district last year. Jamtara MLA Irfan Ansari, Khijri legislator Rajesh Kachchap, and Kolebira MLA Naman Bixal were under suspension since July the previous year after their arrest in a cash haul case. Congress President Rajesh Thakur announced the revocation of their suspension, stating it was on the direction of the party's Jharkhand in-charge, Avinash Pandey. The suspension was imposed after ₹49 lakh in cash was found in their car during a police interception on National Highway 16. The Congress had previously accused the BJP of attempting to topple its coalition government in Jharkhand due to the incident.
