The Indian political landscape witnessed a verbal duel as Congress MP Jairam Ramesh challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assertion about India's economic future. After PM Modi's guarantee of India becoming the world's third-largest economy, Ramesh took to Twitter to express his skepticism, stating that the emergence of India as the third-largest economy was an arithmetical inevitability and not a revelation.

"Typical of Mr. Modi to give his personal guarantee on an arithmetical inevitability. India's emergence as the world's 3rd largest economy in this decade has been predicted for quite some time now, and it's guaranteed – whichever dispensation forms the next government," Ramesh tweeted, alluding to the longstanding projections about India's economic trajectory.

PM Modi made the remark during the inauguration of the revamped ITPO complex in Delhi, which is slated to host the upcoming G20 summit in September.

Ramesh, who heads the grand old party's communications department, further stressed that the real difference in economic growth would be evident if the 26-party opposition bloc, known as INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance), comes to power instead of the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"The key difference is the kind of growth INDIA parties guarantee – growth that is much more socially inclusive, growth that creates jobs not destroys it, growth that raises incomes across the board, and growth that is ecologically sustainable," Ramesh asserted, highlighting the alliance's focus on inclusive and sustainable development.

The Congress and 25 other opposition parties formed INDIA with the aim of unseating the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and preventing them from securing a third consecutive term in power.

The economic position of India has indeed undergone significant changes over the years. In September of the previous year, India surpassed the United Kingdom to become the world's fifth-largest economy. The current top four spots are held by the United States, China, Japan, and Germany, in that order.

Notably, when PM Modi commenced his first term in 2014, India was the world's tenth-largest economy, a fact often reiterated by the Prime Minister and the BJP to showcase the nation's economic progress during their tenure.

As the political battle intensifies, both the ruling BJP and the newly-formed INDIA alliance are set to present their visions for India's economic future in the upcoming elections, vying to shape the path of growth for the world's second-most populous country.
