In a significant development, a 22-year-old carpenter, Uppununthala Harish, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a fast track court for the rape of a minor. The verdict was delivered on Monday following Harish's conviction for the heinous crime.
The case dates back to 2016 when the victim's family members lodged a complaint with the Saroornagar police, alleging that Harish had sexually assaulted the minor. Acting swiftly, the police arrested Harish and initiated legal proceedings against him.
Subsequently, rape charges and charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were filed against Harish, and a chargesheet was submitted to the fast track court for expedited trial and resolution of the case.
During the trial, the special judge found Harish guilty of the charges leveled against him and handed down a sentence of life imprisonment. In addition to the imprisonment, Harish was ordered to pay a fine of Rs 55,000 for his reprehensible actions.
Furthermore, the court recognized the trauma and suffering endured by the victim and awarded her compensation amounting to Rs 10 lakh. This decision reflects the court's commitment to providing justice and support to victims of sexual violence.
Following the pronouncement of the verdict, Harish was taken into custody by the Saroornagar police and transferred to Charlapalli Central Prison to serve his sentence.
