Amit Shah Asserts Firm Stance on Citizenship Amendment Act, Dismisses Opposition Criticism

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the government's unwavering support for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), asserting that it will remain in force and will not be repealed.

In an interview, Shah addressed criticisms from the opposition, emphasizing the constitutional validity of the CAA and dismissing claims that it violates Article 14.

Shah clarified that the CAA aims to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted migrants" target="_blank">non-Muslim migrants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, due to persecution" target="_blank">religious persecution.

Responding to opposition claims regarding the timing of the CAA notification, Shah stated that the government had clearly outlined its agenda in the 2019 manifesto and had passed the bill in Parliament. He emphasized that the delay in implementation was due to external factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shah emphasized that the CAA is a law for the entire country and reiterated the government's commitment to its implementation, dismissing allegations of political opportunism.

The Home Minister underscored the government's moral duty to protect the rights of persecuted individuals and highlighted the CAA's objective to provide refuge to those facing persecution" target="_blank">religious persecution in neighboring countries.

On March 11, the Union Home Ministry notified rules for the implementation of the CAA, further solidifying the government's stance on the issue.

The CAA, introduced by the Narendra Modi government and passed by Parliament in 2019, aims to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted migrants" target="_blank">non-Muslim migrants, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians, who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan before December 31, 2014.
