All India Muslim Jamaat President Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi extended a warm welcome to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) recently notified by the central government. In a statement to reporters, he sought to dispel misunderstandings among Muslims regarding the legislation, emphasizing that it does not pose any threat to their citizenship status.

"The Government of India has implemented the CAA law. I welcome this law. This should have been done much earlier but better late than never... There are a lot of misunderstandings among the Muslims regarding this law. This law has nothing to do with Muslims," Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi affirmed.

He reassured the Muslim community, stating, "Crores of Indian Muslims will not be affected by this law at all... This law is not going to take away the citizenship of any Muslim." Maulana Shahabuddin urged every Muslim in India to embrace the CAA, highlighting its objective to provide citizenship to persecuted non-Muslims from neighboring countries.

The CAA, introduced by the Narendra Modi government and passed by Parliament in 2019, aims to grant Indian citizenship to minorities" target="_blank">persecuted minorities, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians, who fled persecution" target="_blank">religious persecution in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

Following the notification of the CAA by the Union Home Ministry, applications for citizenship under the legislation will be accepted through a dedicated online portal. The implementation of the CAA has been preceded by significant protests and debates, with Maulana Shahabuddin's statement seeking to clarify misconceptions among the Muslim community.

In the past, Union Home Minister Amit Shah categorically stated that the CAA was enacted to provide citizenship, not to revoke anyone's citizenship rights. The law aims to address the plight of minorities" target="_blank">persecuted minorities from neighboring countries, offering them refuge and a path to Indian citizenship.

Despite controversies surrounding the CAA, Maulana Shahabuddin's endorsement and efforts to address concerns among Muslims reflect a broader dialogue on the legislation's intent and impact on religious minorities seeking refuge in India.
