Mumbai Sessions Court Grants Interim Protection to Lawyer Shekhar Jagtap in Forgery Case

The Mumbai Sessions Court has provided interim protection from arrest to lawyer Shekhar Jagtap, who is accused of forging documents to pose as a special public prosecutor in cases against a builder during the Maha Vikas Aghadi regime in Maharashtra. This decision follows a similar grant of protection to Maharashtra Joint Secretary Kishor Bhalerao. Additional Sessions Judge Swapnil Tawshikar emphasized the need to safeguard Jagtap until the investigating officer records statements from state secretariat ministers. The court will revisit Jagtap's anticipatory bail plea on March 14. The case, triggered by a complaint from builder Sanjay Punamiya, alleges that Jagtap misrepresented himself as a special public prosecutor in court appearances related to high-profile cases. Punamiya asserts that Jagtap obstructed investigations to aid the builder and others involved. The state home department clarified Jagtap's legitimate appointment as a special public prosecutor for specific cases, contradicting Jagtap's broader claims.
