Coal Ministry Advocates Pithead-based Thermal Projects for Coal India and NLC India
The Coal Ministry has directed Coal India Ltd (CIL) and NLC India Ltd to prioritize pithead-based thermal projects to diminish transportation costs and enhance the availability of coal. Coal Secretary Amrit Lal Meena highlighted the benefits of this approach, emphasizing reduced reliance on transportation through rail and road, lowered logistics costs, and enhanced accessibility of coal for power generation. CIL has inked a pact with Rajasthan Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (RUVNL) for a joint venture to establish 4,100 megawatts of power generation capacity in Rajasthan, with a significant portion being pithead-based. Similarly, NLC and RUVNL have initiated agreements for power projects in Rajasthan, including lignite-based and solar power plants. Additionally, CIL is exploring thermal projects in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with discussions underway for joint ventures and feasibility assessments ongoing. The transition towards pithead-based projects aligns with efforts to diversify into thermal, solar, and wind power generation by CIL and NLC.
