India / Himachal Pradesh :
The World Bank has pledged its full support to flood-affected Himachal Pradesh, offering crucial assistance in conducting a comprehensive assessment of the damages incurred across various sectors in the state. The proposed assessment, conducted in collaboration with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), seeks to quantify the losses suffered in critical areas such as roads, power, water supply, housing, public buildings, agriculture, horticulture, livestock, ecological services, and more.
In a letter, the World Bank's Country Director for India, Auguste Tano Kouame, expressed appreciation for the timely measures taken by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, including the safe return of tourists stranded in different parts of the state. The World Bank's support is expected to play a pivotal role in facilitating the reconstruction efforts necessary to restore the state's infrastructure and livelihoods.
As part of its commitment, the World Bank also offers technical assistance in various domains, including recovery and reconstruction, disaster risk management, infrastructure design, ecosystem services, and livelihood resilience.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed gratitude for the World Bank's backing and acknowledged the challenging nature of the situation. He stated that the estimated damages caused by the heavy rains amount to approximately Rs. 8,000 crore. The priority of the state government is to focus on restoring roads, bridges, power, and water supply infrastructure to bring normalcy back to affected areas.
However, as per the state emergency response center, the exact losses since the onset of monsoon on June 24 have been calculated to be around ₹5,492 crore. Despite the discrepancy in estimates, the World Bank's support will prove vital in the recovery process for the people of the state.
The Meteorological Office has issued warnings of continued heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh until Saturday, which may exacerbate the situation, leading to more landslides, flash floods, mudslides, and an increased flow of water in the rivers and drains. Given the ongoing weather challenges, the World Bank's support comes at a critical juncture to aid the state in its efforts to rebuild and recover from the devastating floods.
