Ahmedabad: If you drive through Navrangpura you will probably pass by one of its 347 CCTV cameras — the highest in Ahmedabad. Bodakdev with 170 CCTV cameras and Jodhpur with 137 take the second and third spots as the most-monitored spots in the city. Other wards with heavy coverage include
Ahmedabad currently has 1,749 operational CCTV cameras monitoring traffic violations and issuing e-memos across 110 city junctions. The initiative is part of the Safe and Secure Ahmedabad (SASA) project launched eight years ago to install 6,500 cameras
Of the 239 crore allocated for the SASA project Rs 16.20 crore has been spent to install 1,999 cameras at 130 of the 290 traffic junctions in the city between 2018 and 2021. No new cameras have been installed since 2021.
Meanwhile due to development work including the construction of flyovers and metro stations only 1,749 cameras are now operational at 110 junctions.
Over 250 cameras are non-operational including those at prominent junctions like Vadaj Naroda Patiya and Naranpura Pallav.
All 16 cameras at Vastrapur lake have been dismantled while some junctions have cameras but these are not connected to the control room.
On the Sabarmati Riverfront CCTV cameras were planned at 16 junctions including the routes from Danilimda to Shahibaug in the east and from Vadaj to Paldi in the west. However only those installed near Vallabh Sadan and Riverfront Flower Park are currently operational
The officials added that plans to extend coverage to new areas such as Bopal Ghuma Nana Chiloda and Kathwada and junctions connected to Sardar Patel Ring Road are in the tendering stage.
Additionally CCTV cameras have been installed on 70 city bridges which will be connected to the control room. BRTS bus stands have cameras with a separate control room.
