RAJKOT: Alion pride has been spotted in the union territory of Diu causing concern among forest officials over the past three days.

Forest authorities state that Diu's limited territory cannot accommodate a pride necessitating intervention to prevent human-animal conflicts. Pugmarks indicate the sub-adult lions' movement within an approximately 2 km radius.

The lions access Diu's territory via the creek at the Diu-Gujarat border seeking water and sustenance. They traverse the creek during low tide either by walking or swimming across. Dangarwadi serves as their initial entry point after crossing.

A substantial lion population exists within 50 km of Diu in Tulsishyam and Una while lions have expanded their range from Gir to Rajula Jafrabad and Bhavnagar officials suggest that increasing population numbers are driving

In March this year a male lion entered the area and was captured after two months of efforts by Gujarat and Diu Forest Department teams.

This lion was observed in Nagoa Vanakbara and various village settlements. Officials placed cages at tourist locations while hotel management and tourists were alerted about the presence of the wild animal. A leopard was also sighted at the famous Diu Fort prompting an alert for all tourist places
