India / New Delhi :

United States President Joe Biden is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on Friday for a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, followed by his participation in the G20 Leaders' Summit over the weekend.

The White House has announced that Biden will engage in an official arrival and handshake ceremony with Prime Minister Modi on Saturday before joining the G20 Leaders' Summit. Additionally, he plans to visit the Raj Ghat Memorial in honor of Mahatma Gandhi on Sunday before departing for Vietnam.

India assumed the presidency of the G20 in December and has since hosted a series of meetings covering 32 different sectors. These events will culminate in the gathering of leaders from the world's 20 largest economies.

Prior to President Biden's visit, his national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, expressed concerns about achieving a consensus on the Ukraine situation at the G20. He did not anticipate that Russia, represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the Summit, would change its stance. Sullivan noted that most members of the United Nations (UN) and the G20 opposed Russia's "illegal invasion" of Ukraine.

Sullivan emphasized that President Biden would voice his opposition to Russia's war in Ukraine, which has had severe consequences, and would seek a "just and durable peace" in alignment with the UN charter, international law, and principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It is worth noting that both Moscow and Beijing have opposed including the language agreed upon during the previous summit in Bali regarding Ukraine, potentially jeopardizing the possibility of a joint communiqué. When asked about India's position on the conflict, Sullivan mentioned that India had endorsed the statement.

Sullivan also highlighted the United States' strong commitment to the G20 as a platform for achieving significant outcomes during a period of significant international economic challenges. He linked the American agenda at the Summit to President Biden's domestic economic policy, emphasizing greater investments at home. Specifically, the United States plans to push for an ambitious reform agenda for development-banks" target="_blank">multilateral development banks, notably the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, with the goal of making them "bigger and better."
