General Asim Munir said that uncheckedfreedom of speech is contributing to the erosion ofmoral values worldwide.
“Unrestricted freedom of speech is leading to the degradation of moral values in all societies,” General Munir said during the event organised by the Islamabad Policy Research Institute.
While technology has revolutionised access to information it has also facilitated the proliferation of hate speech and disinformation Munir warned that without robust laws to regulate online content the consequences could be dire.
Without comprehensive laws hate speech and misinformation will continue to destabilise societies,” he said.
The general's comments come as Pakistan grapples with increasing misuse of social media platforms. Munir has previously spoken out against "digital terrorism" where online critics are accused of spreading false
The Constitution provides for freedom of speech but also outlines clear limits to prevent its misuse.
He reiterated Pakistan's resolve to combat terrorism and contribute to global peace adding that the country has seen an uptick in terror attacks and continues to face threats
The threat of terrorism is a challenge for all humanity and our resolve in this fight remains unwavering,” he said.
