India / Nagpur :

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is spearheading efforts to transform India's economy into a greener, more sustainable model, with ambitious plans to phase out petrol and diesel vehicles entirely while promoting green mobility alternatives.

In an interview with PTI, Gadkari expressed his firm commitment to the vision of making India free from petrol and diesel vehicles. "One hundred per cent," Gadkari affirmed when questioned about the feasibility of this ambitious goal. He emphasized that while challenging, achieving this objective is not impossible, outlining his vision for a green economy that benefits farmers, enhances rural prosperity, and creates employment opportunities for youth.

Gadkari highlighted India's significant expenditure of Rs 16 lakh crore on fuel imports, emphasizing the potential to redirect these funds towards improving livelihoods and fostering economic growth. To support this transition, Gadkari proposed reducing GST on hybrid vehicles to five per cent and flex engines to 12 per cent, signaling the government's commitment to incentivizing sustainable transportation options.

While Gadkari's vision for green mobility has garnered praise from environmental activists, concerns remain about the reliance on fossil fuel-based energy systems to power electric vehicles. Avinash Chanchal of Greenpeace India emphasized the urgent need for a transition to 100 per cent energy" target="_blank">renewable energy alongside the adoption of electric vehicles to effectively address the climate crisis.

Gadkari, however, remains undeterred, citing his long-standing advocacy for alternative fuels and his confidence in the transition to biofuels. He pointed to initiatives by prominent auto companies such as Bajaj, TVS, and Hero to manufacture vehicles with flex engines, as well as advancements in hydrogen-powered vehicles and bio-CNG technology.

Despite the challenges ahead, Gadkari expressed optimism about the future of green mobility in India. "Definitely, a revolution is taking place," he declared, emphasizing the potential for India to achieve self-reliance and become a leader in sustainable transportation. With ongoing advancements and growing momentum in the green mobility sector, Gadkari's vision for an Atmanirbhar Bharat powered by energy" target="_blank">renewable energy and electric vehicles appears within reach.
