Unemployed ETT teachers Lathi-charged in Sangrur; 25 protestors, 8 cops injured in clash

The members of the 5994 and 2364 ETT cadre unions who have been demanding their job appointment letters for a long time were cane charged on Tuesday after they tried to march towards the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann

The confrontation resulted in injuries to approximately 25 demonstrators and eight police officers. Whilst protesters claimed more than thirty casualties police records indicate 21 hospitalisations. Sub Inspector Kashmir Singh, Station House Officer at Sadar Sangrur police station confirmed eight police injuries from stone-pelting incidents.

The incident occurred after protesters blocked the Patiala-Chandigarh national highway from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm followed by their march towards the CM's residence.

The unemployed teachers voiced their opposition through protests to the AAP-led Punjab government and education department.

Union officials maintain that the Punjab and Haryana High Court has not suspended the 5994-recruitment process despite education department officials citing a court stay as justification

The provisional selection lists for 2364 and 5994 recruitments were issued by the education department on July 25, 2024 and September 1, respectively. However the department has not yet facilitated our joining. During the by-elections in four constituencies of the state the education department halted the recruitment process citing election protocol.
