The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools in five districts due to heavy rainfall from the intensifying northeast monsoon. Schools will remain closed on Wednesday November 20 in Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi Tirunelveli Tenkasi
In addition schools in Kanniyakumari and Pechiparai areas of Kanyakumari district will remain closed due to continuous rain.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rainfall across Tamil Nadu for the next five days and issued a rain alert.
On Tuesday 19 November school holidays were announced in Nagapattinam Thoothukudi and Karaikal districts while schools in Karaikal were closed while colleges in Thoothukudi remained open.
The heavy rains have caused significant disruptions particularly in the delta and southern regions. Roads in affected areas are waterlogged and daily life has been impacted.
The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms and lightning in several parts of the state.
Authorities are on high alert and have deployed disaster management teams to monitor flood-prone areas. Residents are advised to stay cautious and avoid waterlogged areas.
