Home Court Conflicts Claims

India / New Delhi :

The Supreme Court has granted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) an extension until June 15, 2024, to vacate its offices located at Rouse Avenue in Delhi. This decision comes after the court observed that the land was originally allotted for the expansion of judicial infrastructure for the Delhi High Court.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra directed AAP to approach the Land And Development Office for the allocation of alternative land for its offices. The bench emphasized that AAP currently has no lawful right to continue occupying the premises.

Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing AAP, argued that the party is one of the six national parties in India and expressed dissatisfaction with the proposed relocation. Singhvi highlighted disparities in the allocation of office spaces, stating, "They are telling us as a national party we get nothing. I'm given Badarpur, while everyone else is in better places."

Considering the impending general elections, the court granted AAP an extension until June 15, 2024, to vacate the premises, thereby facilitating the utilization of the allotted land for the expansion of the district judiciary's footprint.

Previously, the Supreme Court had instructed the Delhi government and the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court to convene a meeting to address the encroachment by AAP on the land designated for the High Court at Rouse Avenue.
