Nagpur: A social worker has approached the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court alleging malpractice by candidates of various political parties to influence voters by offering freebies.

A division bench of justices Atul Chandurkar and Abhay Mantri granted two weeks to the petitioner to place on record additional material to substantiate the grievance sought to be raised in the proceedings. Pointing out the example of Chimur MLA Bunty Bhangadia, petitioner Gajendra Chacharkar said the former had tried to sway voters by gifting kitchen mixers, sarees and mangalsutras to women of his constituency on Raksha Bandhan.

He prayed for directives to the respondents, including chief election commissioner, to act against such malpractices. The State Election Commission (SEC) in Mumbai, divisional commissioner and collector in the city are made respondents in the PIL.

The petitioner through counsel Ashwin Ingole said he resided in the USA for about a decade and observed non-corrupt and honest democracy there. He contended that the intention of filing PIL is to make efforts for a similar democratic set up in India.
