Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media platform X to extend his congratulations to Shehbaz Sharif on being sworn in as Pakistan's Prime Minister. Despite ongoing protests and allegations of election rigging, PM Modi acknowledged the event, emphasizing diplomatic courtesy.
Shehbaz Sharif, a prominent leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), officially assumed the role of Pakistan's 24th Prime Minister following his swearing-in ceremony held on Monday. The event took place amidst protests organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which has raised concerns regarding the fairness of the recent general elections held on February 8.
The swearing-in ceremony, administered by Pakistan President Arif Alvi at the Aiwan-i-Sadr, was attended by notable political figures, including PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, former President Asif Ali Zardari, and Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. Also present were Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and chief ministers from various provinces, according to Dawn.
Shehbaz Sharif secured victory in the National Assembly, garnering 201 votes, and emerged triumphant over his rival, Omar Ayub Khan, who was backed by PTI. The formation of the government followed discussions between PML-N and other political parties, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), MQM-P, PML-Q, BAP, PML-Z, and IPP.
The recent general elections in Pakistan were marred by allegations of rigging, resulting in widespread protests organized by PTI in the aftermath of the polls. Despite the contentious political climate, Prime Minister Modi's congratulatory message reflects diplomatic decorum and acknowledges the leadership transition in Pakistan.
