"Price Surge Continues: Garlic Reaches Record Rupees 400/kg Following Onion Spike"
India :
The lasoon chutney and garlic tadlaa dishes will have to be kept out of the menu for some time. After onion, prices of garlic have gone through the roof, touching 300-400 in the retail market in the current scenario when supply from across Maharashtra has declined due to poor crop caused by adverse weather conditions in the major producing areas of Nashik and Pune which has spurred wholesale traders from Mumbai to procure supplies from neighbouring Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, adding to the logistic costs and other local levies.
The price of garlic has almost doubled in the past few weeks due to scanty supply and traders at the APMC yard at Vashi predict that the situation will not improve soon. Consumers are feeling the pinch from the new price slab of a key bulb which is sold at 150-250 per kg in the APMC wholesale yards from the previous tariff of
100-150 per kg last month. This change has pushed the retail price to 300 to 400 per kg now. At present, the wholesale market gets
15-20 vehicles (trucks and mini vans) daily, which is lower than the usual arrival of 25 to 30 vehicles. Arrival from southern states has also exhausted significantly, adding up to supply crunch which pushed prices upward.
