Nagpur: In a bid to detect and curb wildlife crimes, the Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR), Maharashtra, will deploy a sniffer dog squad.
The tiger reserve already has one such squad attached to the Paoni unified buffer range.A batch of i young dogs aged 6-9 months of Belgian Malinois breed and their 22 handlers began training on Monday at the Basic Training Centre, Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (BTC-ITBP) camp in Panchkula, Haryana. The training will last for eight months.
With this the wildlife sniffer dog squads, launched by (Trade Records Analysis of Flora and Fauna in Commerce) TRAFFIC and WWF-India, will cross an key milestone as the number of dogs trained under the project will go up to 105. After completion of the training, the ir sniffer dogs will join the forest departments of Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal. Pench's acting field director Prabhu Nath Shukla said,
"Three months ago, we sought a sniffer dog squad from TRAFFIC for our new rapid rescue unit (RRU) at Nagalwadi. Currently, we have one named Willy (Daisy) in Paoni. These squads have played a key role in nailing criminals in the past."
