India / New Delhi :
The ongoing monsoon session of Parliament faced tumultuous scenes as the third day unfolded with chaos, disruptions, and repeated adjournments. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha struggled to function smoothly as the opposition relentlessly sought a discussion on the Manipur issue, further intensifying the deadlock.
The catalyst for the uproar was a viral-video" target="_blank">viral video that surfaced from Manipur, capturing a distressing incident of violence where two women were paraded naked by a group of men. The shocking visuals triggered massive outrage across the country, prompting various political parties to demand Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on the matter within the Parliament's premises.
Addressing the press on July 20, just before the monsoon session commenced, PM Modi had already spoken on the issue. However, the opposition persisted in demanding his statement inside the Parliament.
Amidst the rising commotion in both houses, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stepped forward on Monday to express his willingness to engage in a discussion on the Manipur matter. He emphasized the importance of revealing the truth behind this sensitive incident to the nation. In the Lok Sabha, Shah urged the opposition leaders to allow a discussion to take place in the House, saying, "I am ready for a discussion on this in the House. I request the Opposition to let a discussion take place on this issue. It is important that the country gets to know the truth on this sensitive matter."
Despite the Home Minister's offer, the situation took an unexpected turn when Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh was suspended from Rajya Sabha for obstructing the proceedings. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced Singh's suspension for the remaining duration of the Parliament's monsoon session due to his repeated disruptions even after refusals to comply.
The AAP party reacted to the suspension, stating that its legal team would look into the matter. Delhi Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj affirmed that if Sanjay Singh was suspended for raising his voice for the truth, they would not be upset, and their legal team would investigate the situation. The suspension led to all opposition parties walking out of the Business Advisory Committee meeting in Rajya Sabha, further escalating tensions.
As the chaos continued, opposition party leaders raised slogans against PM Modi and the Central government, marching to the Speaker's Chair to seek the Prime Minister's statement on the Manipur issue. The halls of both houses echoed with slogans like 'PM Modi Shame Shame,' 'We Want Justice,' 'Manipur Wants Justice,' and 'We Want Answer.'
Amid the disruptions, several bills were tabled in the Parliament, including The National Dental Commission Bill, 2023, The National Nursing and Midwifery Commission Bill, 2023, and the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023. However, no discussions could take place due to the ongoing uproar.
Earlier in the day, AAP MP Raghav Chada stressed the nation's demand for the government and PM Modi to address the Manipur issue. He emphasized the Central government's responsibility in restoring peace in the country and expressed the intention to protest against the matter in the Parliament. The Rajya Sabha Chairman's refusal to allow a discussion on the Manipur issue added to the tension.
BSP Chief Mayawati also joined the chorus, expressing her disappointment that despite agreeing to discuss the Manipur issue, the first two days of the current session were wasted on the rule of law dispute. She emphasized the necessity for a discussion and a government statement on the Manipur situation.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi called for the House to function smoothly, demanding the PM's response to the Manipur situation without creating further ruckus in the Parliament.
As the monsoon session continued, the deadlock over the Manipur matter persisted, hindering the effective functioning of the Parliament, with no immediate resolution in sight.
