India / New Delhi :
In an interview with PTI on Sunday, Congress MP Manish Tewari asserted that the united Opposition had no alternative but to introduce a no-confidence motion in the Lok Sabha to press Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the situation in Manipur. Tewari expressed dissatisfaction with PM Modi's 'cursory' remark on Manipur right before the Monsoon Session commenced. He emphasized that failure on the part of PM Modi to respond to the Manipur issue in Parliament would be a travesty.
The Congress MP clarified that the no-confidence motion was not about the numbers favoring the NDA government but aimed at compelling PM Modi to issue a statement on the Manipur situation in Parliament. This was not the first time that the Opposition had brought a no-confidence motion against the PM Modi-led government. In 2018, ahead of the Lok Sabha election, a similar motion was tabled by the opposition, which the NDA ultimately won, securing victory in the subsequent Lok Sabha election the following year.
Responding to the BJP's assertion that history would repeat itself in 2023-24, Tewari wittily remarked, "If history repeats itself once, it is a tragedy, and if it does so twice, it is a farce."
The Congress MP stressed that when a no-confidence motion is accepted, it should be prioritized, and all bills passed after its admission in the Lok Sabha might be "constitutionally suspect." He condemned the situation in Manipur and held the BJP government at the state and center responsible, demanding accountability for the reprehensible occurrences.
Tewari further stated that if PM Modi chose not to address the Manipur situation in Parliament, it would be a travesty, as the motion expressed a lack of confidence in the council of ministers and the reasons for it had been extensively articulated for the past week. He questioned why the government did not accept the adjournment motions proposed by the opposition daily, which could have allowed a minister to reply. The Congress MP highlighted the importance of addressing the issue in Parliament, considering the gravity of the developments in Manipur and the expressed shame about them outside of Parliament.
