"Nagpur's Air Quality Gradually Recovers Post-Diwali Festivities"

India / Nagpur :

Nagpur: City's air quality improved for the fust time since Diwali this month as the air quality index (AQ1) on Sunday recorded

'moderate' reading after remaining in the 'poor' category for most days of November. With an average AQI of 170, Nagpur's air quality is still worse than it is in Mumbai (159), Nashik (146) and Pune (153), as per the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) bulletin on November 19. The major contributor to Nagpur's average AQI being on the higher side is Mahal's continuous ambient air quality monitoring station (CAAQMS) reading of 212, which puts it in the poor category while the rest of the stations — Civil Lines, Ambazari and Ram Nagar — showed average reading of 150.

A day after Diwali celebrations too, Nagpur's AQI was found poorer than that of Mumbai, a city much bigger in geographical size and population. Higher AQI is marked by higher concentration of particulate matter (PM2.5) and PMio in the atmosphere. The average AQI goes up every time PM levels shoot up. With bursting of crackers coming down substantially and weather remaining warmer, the dispersal of pollutants has been quicker in the region in the last few days.
