Acting US Attorney Reagan Fondren of the Western District of Tennessee confirmed that the 35-year-oldAshley Grayson operated an internet enterprise and achieved prominence through her social media presence.
Grayson's Instagram profile portrayed her as a bestseller, eight-figure business coach, course creator and philanthropist. She asserted that she made $1 million in just 40 minutes with an online course teaching others how to turn their own
In 2021 she developed animosity towards a Mississippi-based businesswoman operating in the same sector despite never meeting face-to-face.
In September 2022 Grayson invited a Memphis acquaintance and her spouse to Dallas under the pretence of discussing a "business opportunity."
During the meeting Grayson proposed paying the couple £20,000 each to eliminate three individuals: her Mississippi business competitor a former boyfriend and a Texas resident who had criticised her online.
While the Memphis couple appeared to accept the arrangement they instead provided authorities with video evidence of Grayson offering an additional £5,000 for the swift elimination of the Mississippi woman.
The couple presented Grayson with footage of police lights from an unrelated incident claiming an unsuccessful murder attempt. Grayson compensated them £10,000 for this supposed effort.
The trial took place in March in Memphis. The jury cleared Grayson's husband but found her guilty of murder-for-hire charges.
Acting U.S. Attorney Fondren said this was a twenty-first century crime where online feuds and senseless rivalries bled into the real world. The defendant tried to hire someone to murder a woman over things that happened exclusively on the internet.
This murder-for-hire plot underscores the strength of joint federal law enforcement efforts to ensure the safety of the citizens in our community said Special Agent in Charge Joe Carrico of the FBI Nashville Field Office Memphis Resident Agency.
A judge imposed the maximum 120-month sentence last month. As this was a federal conviction parole is not an option.
