"Mumbai's Iconic Kaali Peeli Taxis to Disappear, Evoking Nostalgia Among Residents"

Maharashtra / Mumbai :

Mumbai, often referred to as the financial and entertainment hub of India, is now without two of its most iconic modes of transportation: the double-decker buses and the Premier Padmini taxis. These taxis, affectionately known as "Kaali peeli" taxis due to their black and yellow colour scheme, have long been a defining feature of Mumbai's cityscape and played a significant role in the city's transportation system.

However, the advent of app-based rides and new bike-based taxi services has led to the decline of these traditional taxis. This comes shortly after the iconic double-decker buses operated by BEST were retired from the city's streets.

Why are they being removed?: The Premier Padmini was the first four seat saloon car manufactured in India and was introduced in 1964 by the Walchand Group and Fiat. Most of the taxis currently in operation have exceeded the 2o-year age limit. A transport department official informed the Press Trust of India that the last Premier Padmini was registered for city roads on October 29, 2003.

However, due to the 20-year age limit, they will no longer be allowed on the city's roads starting from October 30, 2023.
