India / Maharastra :
As monsoonal showers continue to batter India, the West Coast, including Maharashtra, faces the brunt of heavy downpours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts indicating the convergence of several meteorological systems, potentially leading to intense rainfall and flooding in the state.
From Tuesday to Saturday (July 25-29), the IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy showers (64.5mm-204.5mm) over Konkan and Goa, while the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra can expect such weather until Friday (July 28). Vidarbha is likely to experience heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday (July 26-27).
Wednesday (July 26) is expected to see the peak of the ongoing rain spell, with extremely heavy falls (over 204.5 mm) anticipated over Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra. This timing is disconcerting, serving as a grim reminder of the severe storm and deluge that struck Mumbai on the same day in 2005.
In response to these projections, red warnings (indicating the need to 'take action') have been issued over Konkan-Goa and Madhya Maharashtra on Tuesday and Wednesday, which will be followed by orange alerts ('be prepared') in the subsequent days. Vidarbha will also be placed on an orange alert on Wednesday and Thursday.
District-level orange alerts have been raised for several regions, including Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, Nagpur, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Yavatmal, and Amravati, due to the possibility of heavy to very heavy rains in the coming days.
The IMD warns of moderate flash flood risks in certain watersheds and neighborhoods of Konkan and Goa in the next 24 hours, with the possibility of surface runoff and inundation in low-lying areas. Some parts of Mumbai may also experience waterlogging due to the heavy to very heavy rain predictions in the next 48 hours.
Fisherfolk have been advised against venturing into the sea during this squally weather.
This intensified wet spell results from a combination of meteorological systems, including the monsoon trough extending from Rajasthan to Odisha, cyclonic circulations over Northwest Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat's Kutch, and a shear zone around Lat. 20° N. Additionally, a well-marked low-pressure area over the West-Central Bay of Bengal is expected to concentrate into a depression, impacting the West Coast.
As of July, Maharashtra has accumulated a remarkable 50% surplus in rainfall, with 371.7 mm recorded between July 1 and 24 compared to the normal 248.6 mm for this period. With the current weather forecasts, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to mitigate potential risks and ensure public safety.

Summary : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of intense rainfall and potential flooding in Maharashtra due to the convergence of multiple meteorological systems. The West Coast, including Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Vidarbha regions, is expected to experience heavy to very heavy showers in the coming days. The forecast has raised concerns, particularly as the state grapples with a 50% surplus in rainfall for July, bringing back memories of the severe storm and deluge that struck Mumbai on July 26, 2005.
