Nagpur: Grooving under psychedelic lights in restobars is not uncommon in the city, where a large chunk of youths is being swept away by an overwhelming addiction to mephedrone or MD, trapping them in a vicious cycle of sex and drugs. The alarming situation in the state was highlighted in the assembly by deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who underlined the use of social media for pushing drugs. Experts say mephedrone (MD) is one of the triggers for rising crime, high-profile flesh trade, domestic violence, family disputes and even suicide.
Sources said youngsters, particularly girls, are increasingly becoming key patrons, who start as curious consumers and then turn to peddling to fund their addiction. MD is also popular among sex workers and their clients in the city's red light district of Ganga Jamuna, where many customers take the contraband to prolong their sexual encounters.
"Some customers seek MD shots before an
engagement," said an insider, pointing to how girls get lured and sucked into a deadly cocktail of sex and drugs, where any exit from the trapdoor is not easy. City's narco queen, Mamta, who has steadfastly eluded the law, boasts of a robust network of girls who are both consumers and peddlers and turn sex workers at night to earn that extra buck to buy their favourite contraband.
