An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 on the Richter scale struck the capital city of Rajasthan, Jaipur, at 4:09 am on July 21, 2023. The National Center for Seismology reported that the quake's epicenter was approximately 9 kilometers away from Jaipur, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Shortly after the initial earthquake, an aftershock of 3.1 magnitude occurred at 4:22 am, as per the NCS.
Reacting to the tremors, Murari Lal Meena, the minister for tourism and civil aviation in Rajasthan, tweeted, "Earthquake in Jaipur. I hope you all are safe!" Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Vasundhara Raje, also took to Twitter to express her concern, stating that earthquake tremors were felt in other parts of the state as well, including Jaipur, and hoped for everyone's safety.
Videos and firsthand accounts from citizens started surfacing on social media, capturing the intensity of the quake. Jahnvi Sharma, one of the witnesses, posted a video expressing the shock of witnessing such a high magnitude earthquake in Jaipur.
Another citizen, Rameshwar Singh, shared a video from a CCTV camera, capturing the moment when dogs on the street woke up suddenly from their sleep during the tremors.
In a light-hearted tweet, a Twitter user made a reference to J. Robert Oppenheimer, jokingly implying that Jaipur might be celebrating the success of the renowned physicist and his connection to India.
As the region recovers from the seismic event, authorities are monitoring the situation, and citizens are urged to stay cautious and vigilant.
