Lawyer's Use of AI Tool Ends in Job Loss as Fake Cases Surface

A young lawyer who was unable to deal with work pressures and approaching deadlines used ChatGPT to make things easier.

However, the AI tool created some fake scenarios, which resulted in the removal of the lawyer from his law firm. As per Business Insider, Zachariah Crabill, a 29-year old lawyer previously employed at Baker Law Group, got axed from his job this summer for relying on OpenAl's ChatGPT during work hours. Crabill confirmed this to Insider.

Feeling overwhelmed by tight deadlines and office tensions, Crabill's bosses added more tasks in May. Trying to cope, he turned to ChatGPT, a tool he'd used before for reliable research. He wanted it to beef up a legal motion with specifics from Colorado case law.He thought ChatGPT was a lifesaver, saving him heaps of time amidst a tough situation. Crabill mentioned that many lawyers face similar pressures early in their careers. After ChatGPT drafted the motion, Crabill submitted it to his boss and then filed it with the Colorado court. However, he missed a crucial step: verifying the AT's work. His joy turned into horror when he realized that ChatGPT had concocted fake references to lawsuits in the document. Upset and unable to locate these supposed cases in legal databases, Crabill realized the errors stemmed from ChatGPT generating seemingly convincing but utterly false information.
