Kolhapur's Panhala Fort disaster management plan approved: Step towards preserving Maharashtra's heritage

The first fort-specific disaster management plan was prepared for Panhala Fort. The state disaster management authority (SDMA) approved the plan prepared by the Kolhapur district administration and a private consultant.
The fort is located in the Western Ghats of Kolhapur district and was built in the 12th century by King Bhoja II. The fort is prone to wildfire, structural damage, landslides and cloud bursts.
The fort is also located in the earthquake-prone zone of category III. The fort has old heritage sites which are monitored by the ASI. The plan suggests structural repairs, improved emergency access and reinforcement to protect vulnerable buildings.
Recently a team from UNESCO visited the forts in Maharashtra one of which was Panhala Fort. The centre has recommended the forts from the Maratha Empire as heritage sites. During the visit experts from UNESCO suggested the plan to address disasters to avoid any heritage loss
It is the first-ever plan of its kind for a fort not just in Maharashtra but also in India. The plan is also forwarded to NDMA to recommend it as a model document for the entire
Satishkumar Khadke director of the Disaster Management Unit of SDMA wrote a letter of appreciation to the administration of Kolhapur for preparing the plan.
The fort holds a special place in the ancient history of Maharashtra and is an important part of the cultural heritage of the state. It is a popular tourist destination. The exclusive disaster management plan secures vulnerable aspects of the fort and enhances the safety of visiting tourists which is crucial in fortifying disaster management efforts
The state government in association with the World Bank prepared the Maharashtra Climate Resilient Development Programme to address the issues related to floods and heavy rains.
The MRDP plan of a total of Rs 3,400 crore has one component specific to Panhala Fort which is to stop the rock fall on the major roads connecting the fort.
In 2021 a whole portion of a major road connecting the fort caved in. Earlier there were incidences of cloud burst-like rainfall on the fort located 3,200 feet above sea level.
