A tragic fire at Jhansi Medical College claimed the lives of ten newborn babies. Several infants were charred to death while others succumbed to asphyxiation.
Pandemonium ensued throughout the SNCU ward and the emergency department with distraught family members frantically seeking information about their kin. Initial investigations indicate the fire originated from an electrical short circuit with the oxygen concentrator in the ward acting as catalyst
Official records confirm approximately 49 newborn infants were admitted to the ward many with grave ailments. Seven of the ten deceased children were identified while three remain unidentified.
Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak arrived at the medical college early on Saturday. He confirmed 16 children are receiving treatment in the emergency ward while six remain with their mothers in different wards of the medical college. We are investigating the cause of the fire. The ward attendant attempted to extinguish the fire but it intensified due to the oxygen concentrator. Three of the ten deceased children remain unidentified. DNA testing will be conducted if necessary
Among the deceased were three girls and four boys. Two girl children belonged to Nazma and Yakoob of Hamirpur. Three were from Lalitpur their parents identified as Pooja and Bhagwan Singh Sanjana and Sonu Bhagwat and Dharmendra.
A district magistrate Avnish Kumar confirmed critically ill patients were housed in the interior section of the SNCU ward while others occupied the exterior portion. A mother noticed smoke emanating from the ward's end section and raised the alarm within moments women fled with their children but the fire spread rapidly due to the oxygen concentrator.
Fire services and army personnel arrived breaking window panes to rescue trapped occupants. Several newborns were charred beyond recognition. Doctors were observed rushing from the ward carrying multiple infants.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and empathy towards bereaved parents. BSP Supremo Mayawati demanded stern action against those responsible while Samajwadi Party National President Akhilesh Yadav
