India's Computing Infrastructure Hinders Research Contribution: NVIDIA Official

At the StartUp Mahakumbh event, Vishal Dhupar, Managing Director of NVIDIA Asia South, shed light on India's computing infrastructure constraints, which hinder its research contribution and AI development. Dhupar emphasized the critical role of infrastructure availability in fostering research, highlighting India's computing capacity at less than 2% of the global total, which correlates with its modest research contribution of 2%.
Dhupar underscored the disparity between India's research output and that of Indians abroad, noting that the latter contribute around 12% due to superior infrastructure availability in other countries. This disparity underscores the urgent need to enhance computing infrastructure within India to bolster research endeavors and technological innovation.
The increasing demand for GPU-based servers, particularly in AI development, has accentuated the importance of robust computing infrastructure. NVIDIA, as a leading provider of GPU chips, dominates the market with an estimated 88% share. However, the high demand has resulted in a shortage of GPUs globally, leading to delays of 12-18 months in procurement.
In response to these challenges, the Indian government has approved the India AI Mission, allocating ₹10,372 crore over five years to bolster AI development. The mission aims to provide supercomputing capacity, including over 10,000 GPUs, to catalyze the growth of an AI ecosystem in the country.
Dhupar expressed optimism about the government's initiatives, recognizing them as a significant step towards addressing infrastructure gaps and fostering technological innovation. Collaboration with Indian companies like Yotta Data Services to deploy GPU-based servers signals progress in infrastructure development, with plans to install over 20,400 NVIDIA GPU-based supercomputers by June 2024.
Looking ahead, Dhupar stressed the importance of accelerating infrastructure development to unlock India's research potential and drive economic growth. He emphasized that robust computing infrastructure would not only spur research activities but also contribute significantly to the economy, potentially adding $1 trillion in value.
As India seeks to bridge the infrastructure gap and strengthen its position in AI development, partnerships between government agencies, industry players, and technology providers like NVIDIA will be crucial in realizing this vision.
