India / New Delhi :

Indian women's cricket team captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, has been suspended for two international matches after being found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during a recent match against Bangladesh in the ICC Women's Championship series.

Kaur's unsportsmanlike behavior came to light during the tied third One-Day International (ODI) in Mirpur, Bangladesh. In the 34th over of India's innings, Kaur displayed her dissatisfaction with the umpire's decision by hitting the stumps with her bat, resulting in a Level 2 offence under article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to "showing dissent at an umpire's decision."

For this breach, Kaur was fined 50% of her match fee and received three demerit points. However, her actions did not stop there, as she also criticized the umpiring during the presentation ceremony, leading to another breach of the Code of Conduct. Kaur was found guilty of a Level 1 offence under article 2.7, which deals with "public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match." As a consequence, she received an additional fine of 25% of her match fee and one demerit point.

The charges were leveled by on-field umpires Tanvir Ahmed and Muhammad Kamruzzaman, as well as third umpire Moniruzzamman and fourth umpire Ali Arman.

In response to the charges, Kaur admitted her offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Akhtar Ahmed of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Therefore, a formal hearing was not required.

With a total of four demerit points accumulated from both breaches, Kaur's punishment was converted into two suspension points. As per ICC regulations, two suspension points result in a ban from either one Test match or two One-Day Internationals (ODIs) or two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), whichever comes first for the player or player support personnel.

As a consequence of her suspension, Harmanpreet Kaur will be unavailable for selection in India's next two international matches. This includes the upcoming Asian Games scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, during September-October.

The suspension serves as a stern reminder that players, regardless of their status, are expected to uphold the spirit of the game and respect the decisions made by the officials. The ICC's Code of Conduct aims to maintain the integrity of cricket and ensure fair play on the field.
