India / Orissa :

India's railways minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has revealed that the fatal collision between two trains in Andhra Pradesh, India, which claimed the lives of 14 individuals, was caused by the train drivers being distracted while watching cricket on a phone.

The tragic incident occurred in October during a one-day World Cup cricket match between India and England, captivating millions of cricket enthusiasts across the country. According to Vaishnaw, both the loco-pilot and co-pilot of the train were engrossed in the cricket match, leading to the missed signal and subsequent collision.

In response to this revelation, Vaishnaw announced plans to install systems capable of detecting distractions to ensure that train drivers and their assistants remain fully focused on their duties while operating trains.

Th incident in Andhra Pradesh is not the only recent railway mishap in India. Last month, a runaway freight train traveled 40 miles without a driver, prompting officials to take action against the station master and three other employees for negligence. The incident underscores the importance of maintaining vigilance and adhering to safety protocols in railway operations.

India, with one of the world's largest rail networks, has experienced numerous railway disasters over the years, including the tragic derailment in Bihar state in 1981, which claimed an estimated 800 lives. More recently, in June 2023, a three-train collision in Odisha state resulted in nearly 300 fatalities.

In response to these challenges, India has been investing significant resources in upgrading its railway infrastructure, including modernizing stations and implementing electronic signaling systems, to enhance safety and efficiency across the network. However, the recent incidents highlight the ongoing need for robust safety measures and increased awareness among railway personnel to prevent accidents and protect passengers' lives.
