The neonatal period is a crucial phase in a child's life and proper care including breastfeeding and providing nutritious food within the first year greatly influences the child's future development.
She was speaking at the inauguration of a campaign for pneumonia awarenessand the National Newborn Care Week programme held on Friday at the Govt Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial and Haji Abdullah Mother and Child Hospital. The event was jointly organised by the district administration Zilla Panchay
She said that the initial phase of a child’s life requires utmost attention. Timely vaccinations and maintaining cleanliness in the home and surroundings are vital. Ignoring these aspects could lead to health complications.
She pointed out that malnutrition in children can be prevented by ensuring the mother’s health and by providing adequate breastmilk and nutritious food to the baby.

Pediatrician Dr. Venugopal spoke about the objectives of National Newborn Care Week while Pediatrician Dr. Mahadev Bhat delivered a lecture on pneumonia prevention. A pamphlet detailing precautionary measures for pneumonia prevention was released during the event
