The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is calling for research to assess the effectiveness of the Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques Act in curbing female foeticide. This push comes after the IMA faced backlash for advocating the blanket legalisation of sex determination

Dr Sabu George a prominent activist against female foeticide disagreed. "In regions where the PCPNDT Act was implemented effectively,female foeticide rates dropped. The law serves as a deterrent for medical professionals discouraging unethical practices.

Dr George went further calling the IMA's stance "anti-women".

In states like Maharashtra Haryana and Punjab conditions were dramatically worse and improvements were made but the problem persists. Now we are seeing an uptick in cases in regions where the Act was less rigorously enforced such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala
