High Court asks Meta to Stop nylon Manja sales, submit report

Nagpur Bench Of Bombay High Court has directed Meta Platform Inc. (the erstwhile Facebook) to stop use of its online portal for sale of banned manja. On receiving information that many people are using the Meta Platform to sell Banned Manja, the High Court questioned Meta and also asked for Its Report. It has also directed Meta to submit details on Friday of Action taken against Persons misusing the portal for promoting and selling banned manja. While hearing a suo moto public interest litigation on the issue of the "manja" menace, the division bench consisting of Justice Nitin Sambre and Justice Abhay Mantri expressed their concern about the free availabilty of nylon "manja" on social media platforms.

Amicus curiae Adv Deven Chavan informed the court that uncontrolled sale and use of banned nylon string still continued in the city. The online sale of nylon string has been continuing on online shopping websites like Facebook and JioMart. Taking serious note of the information, the High Court had directed Facebook to take action against such promoters. Accordingly, Adv Tejas Karia representing Facebook from New Delhi, who joined the hearing online, said as per the apex court's directions Facebook could not take suo moto action against any individual or company. There-fore Facebook will require either intimation from police authority or the court's directions. If the police authority provides URL IDs of nylon promoters or sellers then Facebook will take action against them, he added
