The Girijana Cooperative Corporation (GCC) based in Visakhapatnam has taken a significant step to support tribal communities engaged in honey collection by enhancing the procurement price of honey. The vice president and managing director of GCC, G Suresh Kumar, announced on Wednesday that the procurement price of honey gathered by honey hunters has been increased from ₹200 to ₹250 per kilogramme.
Suresh Kumar emphasized that the decision to raise the procurement price is part of GCC's commitment to supporting the livelihoods of tribal communities involved in honey collection. He highlighted that honey is abundantly produced in various divisions of Andhra Pradesh, including Paderu, Chintapalli, Rampachodavaram, Tirupati, and Srisailam. GCC plays a crucial role in refining the collected honey at its facilities located in Rajahmundry and Chittoor, preparing it for sale.
In addition to increasing the procurement price, GCC has instructed its purchasing staff to strictly adhere to the norms prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) during the procurement process. Moreover, the corporation plans to issue identity cards to honey-collecting tribes, ensuring transparency and accountability in the procurement process.
Suresh Kumar highlighted that the enhanced procurement price is directly deposited into the accounts of honey collectors, emphasizing GCC's commitment to fair compensation for their efforts. He also stated that officials have been directed to raise awareness among tribal communities about the price increase and the importance of adhering to quality standards.
GCC distributes the refined honey within Andhra Pradesh and to other states through its distributor network and online platforms. The corporation's efforts not only contribute to the economic well-being of tribal populations but also promote the consmption of high-quality honey produced in the region.
Overall, the decision to increase the procurement price of honey reflects GCC's dedication to supporting tribal communities engaged in honey collection and promoting sustainable livelihoods in the region.
