The sudden death of former Boeing employee John Barnett has shocked many, as he was found dead in the US from a "self-inflicted" wound on March 9. Barnett, aged 62, had worked for Boeing for over three decades before retiring in 2017 due to health reasons.

Barnett had recently been involved in a whistleblower lawsuit against Boeing, where he provided evidence highlighting concerns about the company's production standards. He had raised alarm about alleged "sub-standard parts" being deliberately fitted to Boeing aircraft by "under-pressure workers" on the production line.

In addition to concerns about part quality, Barnett had also uncovered issues with oxygen systems in Boeing aircraft, warning that one in four breathing masks might not function properly during emergencies. Despite raising these concerns with management, Barnett claimed that no action was taken to address the issues.

His death comes at a time when Boeing is facing increased scrutiny over its production quality. A recent audit conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) found multiple instances of non-compliance with manufacturing quality control requirements at Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems, another aerospace manufacturer.

The audit was prompted by an incident in January where a mid-cabin door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines flight, leading to emergency landing. The FAA identified various non-compliance issues in Boeing's manufacturing process control, parts handling and storage, and product control.

In response to these findings, the FAA has halted production expansion of the Boeing 737 MAX and is considering the use of a third party to conduct independent reviews of quality systems. Boeing executives have also met with FAA officials to address the concerns raised in the audit.

Barnett's death underscores the seriousness of the issues surrounding Boeing's production quality and the challenges faced by whistleblowers in raising concerns within the company.
