The Coal Ministry has issued directives to Coal India Ltd (CIL) and NLC India Ltd, advocating the prioritization of pithead-based thermal projects to address transportation costs and bolster the availability of coal.
Coal Secretary Amrit Lal Meena underscored the advantages of this approach, emphasizing the reduction of reliance on transportation via rail and road, which would subsequently diminish logistics costs and enhance the accessibility of coal for power generation.
Meena disclosed that CIL has forged an agreement with Rajasthan Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (RUVNL) for a joint venture aimed at establishing 4,100 megawatts of power generation capacity in Rajasthan, with a significant proportion being pithead-based.
Additionally, NLC India Ltd and RUVNL have commenced agreements for power projects in Rajasthan, encompassing lignite-based and solar power plants, further diversifying the energy portfolio.
Moreover, CIL is exploring thermal projects in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with discussions ongoing for joint ventures and feasibility assessments being conducted. In Uttar Pradesh, CIL is engaged in talks with the government to advance plans for thermal capacities in the state, while in Bihar, the state government has offered land for the establishment of a thermal plant, predominantly pithead-based. A CIL team is currently conducting a feasibility report on this proposal.
The shift towards pithead-based projects aligns with the strategic diversification efforts undertaken by CIL and NLC India Ltd, encompassing thermal, solar, and wind power generation, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and accessible energy ecosystem.
