Chennai Metro RailCHENNAI: Chennai Metro RailLimited (CMRL) has awarded a contract of 3,657.53crore to BEML Limited for the procurement of 70 driverless three-car trains.
These trains will serve the corridors 3 (Madhavaram-SIPCOT) and 5 (Madhavaram-Sholinganallur) of the Phase 2 metro rail expansion in the city.
This contract funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) covers the design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning and comprehensive maintenance of trains for 15 years.
The scope includes depot machinery and plant for standard gauge metro rolling stock.
The first train is scheduled to arrive at the Madhavaram depot by late 2026. After delivery it will undergo 14 months of rigorous testing including integration with other systems and service trials. The subsequent trainsets will be delivered in phases between March 2027 and April 2029 ensuring the project progresses on schedule.
