Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud highlighted the importance of providing dignified working conditions for women in the legal profession during an event in Prayagraj.

Addressing the inauguration of an Arbitration Centre and the launch of the book 'Courts of Uttar Pradesh,' CJI Chandrachud underscored the increasing number of women joining the legal profession, particularly in the district judiciary. He emphasized the need to create dignified conditions of work for them to flourish in their roles.

Reflecting on infrastructural challenges, CJI Chandrachud shared an anecdote about the lack of adequate facilities for female judges in Kolhapur court, highlighting the need for gender-sensitive infrastructure in legal settings. He noted efforts in the Supreme Court to address this issue, such as providing separate toilets for women and installing sanitary napkin dispensers.

Furthermore, CJI Chandrachud emphasized the significance of infrastructure for the district judiciary, considering it as the first point of contact for individuals approaching the courts. He described the district judiciary as the cornerstone of the administration of justice in every state.

Expressing concern over the backlog of criminal appeals, CJI Chandrachud urged for introspection within the judiciary. He questioned the reluctance among district judges to grant bail to undertrials and called for a cultural shift to foster an environment of equality and openness.

Looking ahead, CJI Chandrachud announced plans for a conference in Gujarat's Kutch, where district judges will be invited to discuss their concerns. The aim is to provide a platform for district judges to voice their opinions and facilitate meaningful dialogue.

In conclusion, CJI Chandrachud's remarks underscore the importance of addressing challenges faced by women in the legal profession and improving the overall infrastructure and culture within the judiciary to ensure fair and efficient administration of justice.
