For the first time in 28 years Bangladesh has not found mention as a participating country in theKolkata International Book Fair schedule which was released on Friday.
The neighbouring country has featured in every edition of the city book fair since 1996 when the Sheikh Hasina government came to office in Bangladesh.
In 1999 Hasina herself attended the fair when Bangladesh was the theme country. There was no break in tradition between 2001 and 2008 when Bangladesh was governed for five years by Begum Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party and then under military rule until Hasina was back in the PM
Guild president Tridib Chatterjee said they had not yet received any instruction from the Centre on Bangladesh's participation.
As of now the countries participating in the book fair include the UK, US France Italy Spain Peru Argentina Colombia with Germany for the first time as the theme country.
The 48th Kolkata International Book Fair (KIBF) organised by Publishers and Booksellers Guild will be held in Salt Lake between Jan 28 and Feb 9. Like previous years CM Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the book
We are very excited that for the first time Germany, a country with rich cultural heritage and literary legacy will be the focal country. It is largely believed that the Kolkata Book Fair started in 1976 was inspired by Frankfurt Book Fair.

He added that KIBF was the largest book fair in the world in terms of visitors.
Chatterjee said the 2025 KIBF would have 1,050 stalls the same as this year.
About 27 lakh book lovers visited the 2024 fair resulting in book sales of about 23 crore he said adding that around 1,300 publishers have already applied to participate in the fair this time.
